What is Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan®

If you are looking to update your furniture and make it yours then there is no better option than Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®.

This decorative paint was developed over 30 years ago by Annie Sloan herself and is now used by DIY enthusiasts and professional painters alike.

Benefits of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®

It is super simple to use.  Firstly, there is no need to sand or prime your piece as with regular paint.  Really!  Simply ensure your piece is dry and dust free.

You can start painting straight away on varnished or waxed furniture – and that applies to metal, floors and walls!  It is an effortless way to decorate and be creative and the end result will be stunning.

Chalk Paint® is thick so you can create texture with your brush.  If you prefer a smooth finish, just add a little water

It dries super quick.  Chalk Paint® will dry within about 20 minutes – though of course this may vary according to weather conditions.  For best results apply two coats. It is quite possible to start on a painting project in the morning and have it finished by the end of the day!

The paint is incredibly versatile.  You can achieve a variety of simple and stunning results – in fact the hardest part is deciding if you want to achieve the simple vintage look, two colour distressing, the rustic “chippy” look or a simple smooth more modern finish.

We stock a range of the Annie Sloan products and brushes to help achieve these effects.

Is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® environmentally friendly?

Yes, it is a water based and an environmentally friendly alternative to oil based paints. The paints are low in VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) and have been certified as “toy safe” according to European standards. Neither are harsh chemicals needed to clean the brushes.

Whether you are using the Annie Sloan Pure Bristle Brush, the Annie Sloan Nylon Brush, Decorative Brushes or Stencil Brushes, simply wash your brushes in warm water after painting to rinse out all the colour.

The rainbow of colours is endless.

The Annie Sloan Chalk Paint ® palette consists of 44 colours ranging from “Antibes Green” to “Versailles” (links to website).  Combine the colours to make your own bespoke colour.

Here we blended Aubusson with Napoleonic Blue to create our own blue to match the linen upholstery for this chair.

(p.s. did you know that a litre tin of paint covers 13sq. metres?)

Why do I need Chalk Paint® Wax

To seal your Chalk Paint® furniture you need to add a soft and protective finish with Chalk Paint® Wax. Although clear wax is the go-to colour using dark, black or white wax will allow you to create even more alternative finishes.  Depending on the piece of furniture we are painting we use either cotton rags to apply the wax or if there are corners and crevices (like on carved pieces) we prefer using the Annie Sloan Pure Bristle Wax Brush.

Wax is the perfect complement to Chalk Paint® in fact it’s essential to protect your hard work! The Wax will dry to touch very quickly but will take 2 to 3 weeks to “cure”.

The result will be a warm “sheen”.  If you want a really good shine then we suggest buffing your piece after 24 hours.

“For the ultimate smooth and modern finish, apply thinly with one of my Flat Brushes”.

chalk paint burgundy outdoor furniture

For outdoor furniture or tougher areas such as table tops, floors or kitchen cabinets use Chalk Paint® Lacquer.  This is a hard-wearing, water-based polyacrylic varnish with built in UV protection and is available in a Gloss or Matt finish.

We painted this patio furniture in “Burgundy” and then applied a Gloss finish to protect the table and chair from general wear and tear.
